Paper-making & Pulp-painting

Objective:

Introduce participants to the creative versatility of papermaking. Each person will leave with their very own artwork, highlighting their success and providing them with a new sense of accomplishment.

All workshops are welcoming and all-inclusive for groups or individuals of all ages.

Workshop prices include a four hour pre-prepping pulp charge to make 5-5 gallon buckets of various pigmented cotton rag and/or plant based pulp and other crafting materials.

Paper takes 24 hours to dry and can be picked up the next day.

Types of Workshops

  • Time: 2 -4 hours

    Where: Lunar Horizons Studio

    Who: 8yrs - adult

    Papermaking is a versatile medium revealing the creative potential and possibilities to the student. During this workshop, learn the basic techniques of Western-style hand papermaking using a mould and deckle. Lessons will include breaking rag, fiber preparation and sheet formation using a variety of material. Each person will create a number of 12”x 14” pieces of handmade paper. Your finished paper sheets will be placed in a restraint drier and ready to use the next day.

  • Time: 1 hour

    Where: Lunar Horizons Studio

    Who: Ages 8yrs - adult

    Accelerate your experience to the wonder of pulp-painting with this one hour class. This technique is inspired by the Nepalese paper makers who format their sheets by pouring liquid pulp into large screens that are submerged under water. The screens are then lifted out of the shallow basin and allowed to dry in the sun. Each participant will be guided through the basic process on how to pour different colored pulp into a submerged screen to create one Nepalese pulp-painting. The use of stencils and a variety of acrylic colors of your choice will also be available to embellish the pulp-painting. The finished dry art work will be available 24 hours after class or can be taken home wet with drying instructions.

    Papermaking is a transformative experience. You literally turn rags into pulp, pulp into paper paintings. It is a simple process with successful results. This technique is inspired by the Nepalese paper makers who format their sheets by pouring liquid pulp into large screens that are submerged under water. The screens are then lifted out of the shallow basin and allowed to dry in the sun. Participants will be actively engaged in the rag to pulp process using old t-shirts. They will learn the history of Nepalese paper making, different types of fibers used, pigments, an overview of decorative and compositional techniques, including instruction on how to cut and layer stencils. Each participant will make their own large size pulp painting.

  • Time: 2-4hr

    Who: 8yrs - adult

    In this workshop participants will become fully engaged in the process of preparing, cooking plant material, breaking rag to render into pulp and sheet formation.  There will be an overview of decorative techniques, the use of pulp additives and recording your paper recipes.  Also included is a lesson on how to make a small soft covered book using a pamphlet stitch binding. 

    Each participant will make approximately eight to ten sheets of 11”x 14” flower paper.  The finished paper will be ready 24 hours after the completion of the workshop.
